This Week @ D&E

Hello all! Blues week has passed and we have already started Irish week! It has been exciting so far. There are people here on campus of all ages enjoying the music and the dancing. Check out the schedule this week and make sure you come up and check it out! It has been a blast for me and the people i have met! Last week, we had a couple get engaged while here for Blues week. Congratulations! I have already met some great people and I'm glad I chose to be here this summer! Here are some pictures from Blues week! Enjoy!

It's Irish Week at D&E!

Come enjoy the many activities available during Irish/Celtic Week at Augusta! Don't miss out on all that's happening. Concerts and dances are free to staff and faculty and their spouses.

Regular 5-day workshops: Remember that Staff and Faculty can take the regular 5-day classes for 50% of the full tuition. See www.augustaheritage.com/irish.html and www.augustaheritage.com/crafts.html for details about classes and instructors.

Augusta Mini-classes are held Monday thru Thursday from 6:30 to 7:45pm unless otherwise stated (see www.augustaheritage.com/miniclasses.html): Bodhran, Calligraphy, Ceili Band, Fiddle From Scratch, Beginning Old-Time Banjo, Ottawa Valley Step Dance, Appalachian Songs & Ballads, and Irish Songs & Ballads. Tuition is $45 per person. Some classes may require a small materials fee. (You may still register until just before the first class on Monday evening. Come to the Augusta Information Desk in Darby Hall.)

  • Contra Dance - Sunday, July 20, 9:00 pm, pavilion. Caller: Joyce Rossbach. Music by Bob Smakula, Denice Reese, & Friends.
  • Lecture - Monday, July 21, 8:00 pm, Madden Center Lounge. "The Renaissance of Traditional Irish Music and America's Role In It" by Robbie O'Connell.
  • Irish Dance - Monday, July 21, 9:00 pm, pavilion. Caller: Jim Keenan and Timmy "The Brit" McCarthy. Music by Joanie Madden & Friends.
  • Show and Sell – Tuesday, July 22, 4:30-6:30pm, Madden Center Rotunda. Crafts, recordings, and instruments made by staff and students will be for sale and on display.
  • Irish Concert - Tuesday, July 22, 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:30), Harper McNeeley Auditorium. MC is Joanie Madden. (Don’t forget the silent auction.)
  • Irish Dance - Tuesday, July 22, immediately following the concert, pavilion. Caller: Jim Keenan. (If you attended the concert, you may dance for free.)
  • Pickin’ In the Park – Wednesday, July 23, 7:00-11:00 pm, Elkins City Park. Acoustic jam sessions are open to all. Join a jam, start one of your own, or just come to listen. No alcoholic beverages permitted.
  • O'Carolan Session - Wednesday, July 23, 8:00 pm, Chapel. All instruments welcome. Led by David James.
  • Contra Dance - Wednesday, July 23, 9:00 pm, Pavilion. Caller: Joyce Rossbach. Music by Les Enfants du Fromage.
  • Craft Student Showcase – Thursday, July 24, 6:15-7:45 pm, Hermanson Center Lounge. See displays and demonstrations by this week’s craft classes: Blacksmithing, Celtic Design and Lettering, Celtic Enameled Jewelry, and Celtic Stone Carving.
  • Irish Concert - Thursday, July 24, 8:00 pm, Harper McNeeley Auditorium. MC is Jim Flanagan. (Don't forget the Silent Auction.)
  • Ceili Band Dance - Thursday, July 24, immediately following the concert, in the pavilion. Caller: Jim Keenan.
  • Irish Week Student Showcase – Friday, July 25, starting at 1:30 pm, in the Madden Center Lounge. Performances by the Irish Week music and dance classes.
  • Ceili Dance - Friday, July 25, 8:00-9:30 pm, Pavilion. Irish set dancing. Caller: Timmy "The Brit" McCarthy.
  • Augusta Squares and Contra Dance - Friday, July 25, 9:30-11:30 pm, Pavilion. Caller: Joyce Rossbach and Mary Alice Milnes. Music by Gerry Milnes & Friends.

D&E Sports Camps This Summer

Volleyball -- Senators Ultimate Training Camp, Grades 7-12, August 4-6, $60. Call LaTonia Allen for more info or to register at extension 1391.

Girl's Basketball Day Camp Dates Announced

First Year Women's Basketball Coach Jason Asbell has announced the dates for his inaugural camp at D&E. He will hold a Day Camp, August 11-13 for rising 7th-12th grades girls from 9 A.M. to noon. The cost for the camp is $50 which will include a t-shirt. Space is limited so please contact Coach Asbell at 304-637-1261 to reserve your spot today.

 

Get FIT this summer!

Yoga is happening.The next session is August 4-7th. Each class will be held from 12 noon to 12:50 in the upstairs lounge of Jennings-Randolph by instructor Kristin Holmes. This class is offered for all skill and flexability levels. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel and a strap/belt (used as a support for yoga posture). Yoga mats will be provided. Kempo Karate will be offered also. This will be offered free of charge to all D&E students, faculty and staff, and the spouses of faculty and staff (charges for the uniform anf equipment will be explained). Please contact Dr. David Sneed for more information at 304-637-1211.

ATTENTION ALL WALKERS - Join the "Walking Off the Abs" session in Booth Library every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at noon. Put on your walking shoes and get ready for a full-body workout. It's fun and effective, says Wendy Morgan. For more info, call Wendy at x1341 or Robin Price at x1243.
