The D&E Difference

People really do have more in common with each other than they do differences. We share many similar features - hearts, hands, minds and bodies. But our differences are what stand out. They are the distinguishing factors that make us who and what we are.

You might observe the same with colleges and universities. There are many similarities between schools. But the differences are what distinguish the quality of education we offer and what make our graduates who and what they are.

What makes D&E different?

Our Location

Can mountains, forests and rivers make you smarter? Maybe. Certainly, they can create unique opportunities for learning. And they have inspired writers, philosophers, educators, and scientists throughout the ages. No other college in West Virginia is closer to our state's premiere outdoor areas. Add skiing, climbing, hiking and biking to the difference our location makes, and you have all the ingredients for an exceptional experience at D&E.

Winter Term

In today's hurried world, the opportunity to focus on one subject for a few weeks would be a luxury, wouldn't it? That's a luxury we afford every student at D&E through our unique Winter Term program. It's a three-week semester tucked between our regular first and second semesters that focuses students on one subject of their choosing. Some students use it for research. Others for travel. Still others manage it like a bonus course, catching up or getting ahead on requirements for their major. No other college in West Virginia offers a Winter Term. In fact, we are part of a small group of institutions across the nation to offer this elite learning option.

Student Engagement

If you want to get noticed, you'll really like D&E. Professors know students by name here and so do the cafeteria staff, the resident assistants, the coaches, the dean, and the president. With a highly desirable 12:1 student to faculty ratio, students can be recognized and get to know their professors one-on-one. Plus, you can readily participate in a wide range of clubs and activities, both social and academic. Internships provide an added dimension to a D&E education, often by connecting students with successful alumni in a wide range of fields. Our commitment to engaging students in learning and in life just seems to bring out their best.

An Eclectic Campus

Having two Victorian mansions and a national historic district on campus add elegance and opportunities for D&E students. The circa 1893 Graceland Inn is a learning lab for students in our hospitality program, and Halliehurst Mansion's Icehouse, circa 1890, provides a private on-campus club for upperclassmen that's an easy walk to the residence halls. More modern facilities, such as the new Center for Health, Physical Education and Athletics, the extraordinary Booth Library, and the popular Madden Center, give D&E a more contemporary edge and the kind of services students expect. It's an eclectic and interesting campus environment with the facilities students need and the comforts they deserve.
