Davis & Elkins College is a coeducational liberal arts college which offers a personalized undergraduate education that values breadth and depth of learning and affirms the importance of tradition and experimentation. The College offers more than 30 baccalaureate and associate degree programs representing the arts and sciences and pre-professional and professional studies.
The Campus
Views of the Appalachian Mountains grace the intimate, wooded campus, which includes 20 major buildings on 170 acres. Most of the buildings are clustered together on a low ridge overlooking the city of Elkins. Farther back on the north section of the campus are Booth Library, Eshleman Science Center, Robbins Chapel, the Hermanson Center–Auditorium complex, and the athletic fields. The Davis & Elkins Historic District was established in 1996 by the U.S. Department of the Interior and includes National Historic Landmarks that house both academic and administrative facilities.
Distinctive Programs
D&E offers several distinctive academic programs that offer unique learning opportunities and experiences. A major difference at D&E is Winter Term, an intensive three-week program during the month of January that allows students to take just one course. The benefits to students are many. For some, it is a chance to explore in depth an intriguing new area of study. For others, it is an opportunity to engage in research or off-campus study. For others still, it is a window of opportunity to squeeze in additional credit hours within the academic year. Other distinctive programs at D&E include the Honors Program for students seeking an additional challenge, the Supported Learning Program, and the College’s new majors in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Location
Elkins, West Virginia--a vibrant community of nearly 10,000--lies in the center of one of the East’s most important outdoor recreation areas. Nearby scenic and historic destinations include the 900,000-plus acre Monongahela National Forest, the National Radio Observatory, Canaan Valley, Blackwater Canyon, Snowshoe Mountain resort, and Seneca Rocks.
Most of the metropolitan areas of the East, South and Midwest are within a day's driving distance of the College. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is 150 miles to the north and Washington, D.C., is 200 miles to the east. U.S. 219, 250, and 33 and State Route 55 pass through the city. Commercial air service is available at nearby Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Heritage
Davis & Elkins is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was established through the influence of former United States Senators Henry G. Davis and Stephen B. Elkins. The first classes were held on September 21, 1904.
Honors
U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Davis & Elkins College to the top tier of its category in the magazine's 2008 Guide to America’s Best Colleges. The list, which categorizes schools according to classifications established by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, ranks Davis & Elkins No. 17 of 95 Baccalaureate College in the South.
Accreditation/Affiliations
Davis & Elkins College is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Learning of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Associate Degree Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing and also by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Nurses.
The College is affiliated with the Association of Presbyterian Colleges & Universities, Applalacian College Association, Teacher Education Accreditation Council, International Assembly for College Business Education, National Association of Schools of Theatre and the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Faculty
45 full-time faculty; 84 percent hold doctorates or professional degrees.
Financial AidApproximately 95 percent of D&E students receive financial aid, with an average amount of assistance of more than $10,000.
Housing
Both single-sex and coed residential facilities are available. On-campus housing is available in a variety of residence hall settings with housing guaranteed during all four years.
Student Clubs and Organizations
35 student organizations, including four national fraternities.
Athletics
D&E is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Div. II, and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Sanctioned sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, softball and volleyball. The College’s coed ski team, organized under the auspices of the U.S. Collegiate Snow Sport Association, competes in the Allegheny Conference.
