Distinguished Alumnus Award

Susan ColussyClass of 1967

 

The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest award given to an alumnus or alumna who has made significant contributions to society in his or her career. The criteria for selection include career advancement, service to others, significant honors and commitment to Davis & Elkins College.

 

Susan H. Colussey graduated from Davis & Elkins College with a bachelor's degree in 1967 and received her law degree from Georgia State University College of Law in 1986. She was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1986. Since then, she has provided legal services to Catholic Social Services, first as a staff attorney from 1985 to 1988, and then as the Program Director of Immigration Services. She also has taught law for the University of Georgia Law School.

 

Colussey has served on the Asylum Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and has been a speaker for their national convention. She also serves on the Catholic Legal Immigration Network Diocesan Advisory Board and has been a speaker for their "gatherings." Colussey is a member of the Atlanta chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and is a co-editor and contributor to its "AILA Litigation Toolbox."

 

Colussey received the Emory University College of Law EPIC "Inspiriation Award" in 2007 and has received numerous other professional awards, including the Atlanta Bar Association Liberty Bell Award, the Georgia Trends "Legal Elite" Pro Bono Group award, the AILA Sam Williamson Mentoring Award, the State Bar Assocation of Georgia Spann Pro Bono Award, and the City of Atlanta's Phoenix Award. Colussey has been listed in both Who's Who in Law and Who's Who in Religion.

 

Tower Award

H. Flint Engleman II Class of 1990

 

The Tower Award is given to an alumnus or alumna for outstanding service to the College and its alumni program.

 

Flint Engleman graduated from Davis & Elkins College with a bachelor's degree in Management and Health Care Administration in 1990 and was also named the 1990 Davis & Elkins College Outstanding Business Student of the Year. An active and dedicated member of the D&E community as a student, Engleman was named to the College's Dean's List four years, was a member of Beta Alpha Beta Honorary Business Fraternity, received the Clifford B. Scott Key Award of Sigma Phi Epsilon for Academic Excellence, received the 1988 National Sigma Phi Epsilon Operational Excellence Award, and was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities four consecutive years. He was president, vice president and treasurer of student assembly, was the student representative to the D&E Board of Trustees from 1988-1990m was active in the College Senate, a DJ for WCDE, a member of the Campus Activities Board, and an editor for The Senator. He played for the Tennis Team and acted in D&E Theatre productions, served on the College Court, was named senior class Homecoming representative and held multiple offices in his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon.

 

Following graduation, Engleman continued to be an active contributor to his profession, his community and Davis & Elkins College, providing outstanding service to D&E. The owner of Maverick Consulting, a strategic marketing firm in Barbourseville, Virginia, Engleman is a member of the Virginia Bankers' Association, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, and the Mid-Atlantic Notary Association. In his community, Engleman volunteers for the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the Barboursville Masonic Lodge, the Ruckersville Citizens Council, the Finley Memorial Presbyterian Church and Greene County Emergency Services as an EMT. He has received many professional awards, including the SunTrust Bank Edgemaster Award in 2006.

 

Engleman's commitment to service at Davis & Elkins College is evident in the many contributions he has made to his alma mater as a member of the National Alumni Council, the A/PART program, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Alumni Association, and the Centennial Celebration Planning Committee. He has worked at college fairs to help recruit new students, attended regional alumni events, attended numerous D&E athletic events and come to every homecoming since 1990. He participated in focus groups for the College's marketing plan, hosted National Alumni Council meetings and served as the College's representative to the Installation of new presidents at Bridgewater and Longwood colleges. He is currently chairman of the D&E NAC's Campus Life Committee.

 

Outstanding Young Alumnus Award

Nathaniel Bonnell

Class of 2003

 

The Outstanding Young Alumnus or Alumna Award is given to a graduate of Davis & Elkins College who shows unusual promise in his or her profession and loyalty and commitment to the College.

 

Nathaniel Bonnell showed great promise as a student at Davis & Elkins College. He was an All-American Scholar, an award-winning member of Beta Alpha Beta, a junior marshall, the James Rodish Memorial Scholarship Award winner, a member of the Dean's List and the National Dean's List, Phi Beta Lambda national business fraternity, Students in Free Enterprise, the Accounting Club, Alpha Chi, Sigma Beta Delta, and the Honors Program. He received leadership and academic awards at D&E, was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and was named Valedictorian of his graduating class. In 2002, he received the highest score on the West Virginia CPA exam and was recognized with the West Virginia Society of CPAs Outstanding Accounting Senior Award.

 

Upon graduation, Bonnell joined Citizens National Bank, where he is now Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In this position, he manages the bank's $60 million investment securities portfolio, directs the bank's financial and budgetary plans, develops and coordinates financial and management reporting as well as the bank's asset/liability, liquidity and risk management programs. Bonnell joined Citizens National Bank as an assistant to the internal auditor and moved rapidly up the organization, successfully introducing new technology and efficiency to the bank's reporting operations.

 

Bonnell received his MBA from West Virignia University in 2007 and his certification as an Information Systems Auditor in 2004. He also remains active in his community, serving Davis & Elkins College as a volunteer in the Business Program and assisting local orgainziations, like the Randolph County United Way, in using technology to improve its ability to accept and monitor contributions.
