Department Philosophy
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science offers curricula designed to develop within the student an understanding of the process of scientific inquiry as well as an appreciation of the underlying unity and diversity of life. The program further aims to establish an understanding and appreciation of the relationships that operate within the biosphere, especially those involving humankind.
The Department offers several programs including Bachelor of Science degrees in both Biology and Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree that combines both Biology and Environmental Science.
The Department also offers cooperative programs in both Forestry and Environmental Science which lead to a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in either area. These programs are operated in cooperation with the State University of New York at Syracuse and require a total of five years to earn the two degrees rather than the six years normally required to earn both a BS and MS degree.
The Department offers strong Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Pharmacy and Pre-Veterinary Science programs.
A Biology and Environmental Science research area is maintained at the Pigeon Creek Watershed site, located 1.5 miles north of the campus. Both students and departmental faculty are involved in ongoing research projects within this experimental watershed area.
