Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

Chemistry is often called the Central Discipline because it directly connects with most of the other natural and physical sciences. The programs for chemistry majors are designed to provide a solid foundation in the theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills necessary for a variety of professional careers.

In order to fit the needs of the individual student, the department offers three programs of study to obtain a B.S. in chemistry.

The general chemistry program provides a foundation for graduate study in chemistry or preparation for a career as a professional chemist in industry and research.

The chemistry-pre-medical program is designed for students who plan to continue their education in the medical field.

The chemistry-secondary education program is designed for students who want to meet the requirements for teaching chemistry in the middle, junior high and senior high school.

Any of the above programs of study also fulfills the requirements for students who desire to pursue a non-traditional career with a chemistry degree.

A minor in chemistry is also offered by the department.

Degree Requirements

The specific requirements for a B.S. degree in Chemistry consist of 38 semester hours of coursework including the following courses:

  • Chemistry 101 - Fundamentals of Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 102 - Fundamentals of Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 103 - Chemical Laboratory Principles I
  • Chemistry 104 - Chemical Laboratory Principles II
  • Chemistry 201 - Analytical Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 202 - Analytical Techniques I
  • Chemistry 205 - Organic Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 206 - Organic Techniques I
  • Chemistry 207 - Organic Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 208 - Organic Techniques II
  • Chemistry 301 - Physical Chemistry I
  • Chemistry 302 - Physical Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 397 - Seminar and Thesis
10 additional semester hours of chemistry elective courses chosen from:
  • Chemistry 203 - Analytical Chemistry II
  • Chemistry 204 - Analytical Techniques II
  • Chemistry 215 - Undergraduate Chemical Research
  • Chemistry 304 - Biochemistry I
  • Chemistry 305 - Biochemistry II
  • Chemistry 306 - Chemical Experimentation
  • Chemistry 310 - Inorganic Chemistry
  • Chemistry 399 - Independent Study
