Study Abroad
An important aspect of our mission at Davis and Elkins College is to encourage students
to develop an increased awareness of the various cultures that constitute our diverse world community. A
study abroad experience provides an ideal method for students to learn about another culture through personal
contact with its people and places. Studying abroad for a semester or longer provides foreign language majors
and minors with invaluable interactions with native speakers in their cultural context. Davis & Elkins
encourages study abroad and is flexible about transferring credit hours from foreign institutions for our
students who enroll there. The College also offers faculty-led study abroad options of shorter duration which
satisfy the general education cultural diversity requirement and can, under certain circumstances, partially
satisfy the foreign language requirement.
Group Travel and Study with D&E Faculty
The foreign language program offers short courses, chaperoned by faculty, which emphasize cultural and
language study in Spanish-speaking countries. These courses are offered during a summer session or during
the Winter Term. Recently, student groups have lived and studied in Barcelona and San Sebastián in Spain,
and have toured the Yucatán in Mexico. In the summer of 2004, students lived and studied in Costa Rica
for three weeks.

Group study abroad (often with D&E faculty participation) is also available through the Appalachian
College Association’s summer program in London, England.

Individual Study Abroad
With the assistance of the D&E Study Abroad Co-ordinator, students are able to select and enroll in
semester-long or year-long programs affiliated with foreign universities and language institutes.
Foreign language majors are especially encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities. In recent
years, D&E students have attended the University of Seville in Spain and language institutes in Costa
Rica, and have studied in France, England, Australia, and Ireland.
Study at foreign colleges and universities is also facilitated by the Appalachian College Associations’s
Insititute for Study Abroad, which is located at Butler University. Please consult their website at
http://www.ifsa-butler.org.
Scholarships for study abroad are available through the Appalachian College Association, and Davis &
Elkins tuition can also, under certain circumstances, be applied to study abroad programs at foreign
colleges and universities.
