The McDonnell Center
for Health, Physical Education, and Athletics
The McDonnell Center for Health, Physical Education, and Athletics was dedicated October 13, 2007. With Phase I and Phase II of this project complete at a cost of $6 million, the new 41,333-square-foot McDonnell Center is providing a dynamic home for Davis & Elkins College’s intercollegiate sports, physical education, recreation, and fitness programs. In addition to providing greatly-needed facilities to support activities of the campus community and the wider community of Elkins and Randolph County, this beautiful new facility enhances the College’s ability to attract fitness-minded students, and particularly student athletes.
Phase I and Phase II: Complete
The Arena The 1,000-seat arena provides a state-of-the-art playing floor and a comfortable, dynamic space for intercollegiate basketball and volleyball games. Convertible to two full basketball playing floors, the arena provides flexible space for physical education classes and intramurals, and an exciting new venue for regional tournaments.
The Track The Myles Ahead walking and jogging track, equipped with a shock-absorbent surface, circles the upper level of the arena, providing a safe, comfortable place for students and community members alike to exercise regardless of weather.
Lobby and Athletic Hall of Fame The Hilda and Robert R. Butler Lobby, which spans the entire front of the building, provides a spacious, inviting place for visiting between classes and games, or for enjoying a snack from the Mike Ross, Inc. Concession Stand. The Athletic Hall of Fame features trophies, historic displays, and plaques recognizing Hall of Fame members.
Student Athlete Support Area The student athlete support area features the John H. and LeAnn Harling Men’s Basketball Locker Room Suite; the Daywood Foundation Women’s Basketball Locker Room Suite; the Wendell M. Cramer Men’s Physical Education and Multi-sport Locker Room Suite; the Mary Jane Peyton Phillips Women’s Physical Education, Volleyball, and Multi-sport Locker Room Suite; the Friends of Senator Soccer Training Suite; the Mr. and Mrs. H. Flint Engleman II Men’s Officials’ Locker Room; and the Michael F. and Priscilla C. DiMario Women’s Officials’ Locker Room.
Phase III: Planned

Learning, Teaching, and Administrative Areas Facilities will include classrooms, a fitness lab, a conference room, and offices for the Athletic Director, coaches, and professors in the Health, Sport, and Movement Science department.
