Davis & Elkins Forming Cheer Team, Pep Club

Elkins – Davis and Elkins College has established a cheerleading squad and pep club to root on the Senator athletic teams in their upcoming seasons. The squad will make its debut in time to cheer for the men’s basketball team at home games, starting in November.

Davis & Elkins Starts Community Walking Club

Elkins – Davis & Elkins College is launching a community walking club at its new indoor walking and jogging track in the McDonnell Center, D&E’s new health, physical education, and athletics facility. The “club” is for everyone who wants to walk on an indoor track and you can participate as often or as little as you like.

| D&E Senators Add Recent Alumni to Coaching Staff |
Elkins – Davis & Elkins College is maintaining athletic tradition by adding young alumni to its coaching staff. This fall, four 2008 graduates take on positions as assistant coaches, and two 2006 graduates will be back for another year.

| Amethyst Initiative Opens Debate on Underage Drinking |
Elkins – Silence is not always golden, especially when it leads to clandestine behavior, life-threatening activities and little to no means for remedying the situation. This, says D&E President G. T. “Buck” Smith, is why he signed on with more than 100 other college and university presidents nationwide to the Amethyst Initiative, which is encouraging discussion of the legal drinking age and the problems that underage drinking creates.

Elkins – The Davis & Elkins College Yard Sale, held last Saturday, August 9, in Memorial Gymnasium, was a great success. The College raised closed to $3,000 in the few short hours of the sale.

Davis & Elkins Names New Provost

Elkins — Davis & Elkins College President G. T. “Buck” Smith has named Dr. Kisor Kumar Chakrabarti as Provost and Dean of Faculty, succeeding Dr. Larry McArthur, who has elected to return to teaching at D&E after serving as dean for 10 years. Dr. Chakrabarti will also serve on the D&E faculty as Professor of Philosophy.

| Davis & Elkins Makes College Visits Fun and Informative. |
Elkins — Davis & Elkins College is taking a new approach to the traditional College open house with a series of 13 “themed” visit days that will give prospective students an enlightening and enjoyable look at life at D&E. Starting September 6, interested students and their families can participate in a D&E Open House any weekend through November 15. It’s easy to sign up. Elkins — Davis & Elkins College President G. T. “Buck” Smith has named Mr. Emerson Wickwire to the new post of interim Chief Financial Officer. Wickwire has been a consultant to D&E since 2007, working closely with the College’s administration and Board of Trustees in focusing on a broad range of financial issues.

Elkins — Davis & Elkins College President G.T. “Buck” Smith named a new team of leaders for D&E Athletics today. Amrit Rayfield, Dr. Mary Ann DeLuca and Will Shaw will share responsibilities for the direction of athletics while fulfilling their other roles in coaching and physical education.

| D&E Holding Giant Yard Sale August 9 |
Elkins—Davis & Elkins College will hold a giant yard sale on Saturday, August 9, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium on the front campus. Items will include desk supplies, shelves, cabinets, desks, chairs, tables, fitness equipment, books, cameras, and more, all donated by campus offices and D&E employees.

Davis & Elkins Names Chief Technology Officer

Elkins — Davis & Elkins College President Buck Smith has named Matt Tarbett Chief Technology Officer for the College. Tarbett, who was most recently Associate Director of Technology Infrastructure at Bethany College, is charged with enhancing D&E’s technology, specifically the College’s broadband and wireless infrastructure.

Elkins—The Davis & Elkins College admissions team met for two days last week to gear up for its recruiting plan. Regional officers from several states learned about upcoming plans for open houses, visit days and new marketing initiatives and also enjoyed dinner at the home of President Buck and Joni Smith.

New President Presents Priorities for Campus, Community

Elkins—New Davis & Elkins College President G.T. “Buck” Smith addressed a standing-room-only crowd in Robbins Chapel July 1, his first day as the College’s president. Both campus and community members were invited to the gathering to meet Smith and his wife, Joni, and to hear Smith’s plans for D&E’s future. He started his talk with his philosophy on leadership – a “can-do” philosophy designed to engage faculty, staff and community members in the education of D&E students.
