D&E Phipps Lecture November 16
Posted: 11/03/09
Elkins, WV — The Davis & Elkins College annual William E. Phipps Interdisplinary Lecture will feature a talk by Dr. Charles Mathewes, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, on Monday, November 16, 7:30 p.m., in the great hall of Halliehurst. The talk is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a reception with Dr. Matthewes. Charles Mathewes teaches religious ethics and religious thought. He spent much of his childhood in Saudi Arabia, and was educated at Georgetown University and the University of Chicago. He is the author of Evil and the Augustinian Tradition and A Theology of Public Life, both with Cambridge University Press, and has edited three other books. Two new books are forthcoming in 2010. One, The Republic of Grace, from Eerdmans Publishers, investigates religious political imaginations after 9/11. The other, Understanding Religious Ethics, from Wiley-Blackwell Publishers, explores the religious ethics of the Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. He is also Associate Editor of the forthcoming third edition of the Westminster Dictionary of Christian Ethics. In 2003 at the age of 34 he was appointed Editor of The Journal of the American Academy of Religion, the flagship journal in the field of religious studies, and is the youngest editor ever of that journal, where his tenure ends in 2010. With his wife Jennifer Geddes, he is Co-Principal of one of UVA's residential colleges, Brown College at Monroe Hill. The Phipps Lectureship was established at Davis & Elkins College in 1995 in honor of Dr. William Phipps, professor emeritus of Religion and Philosophy at Davis & Elkins College, to bring accomplished scholars from a wide range of backgrounds to campus and to provide opportunities for these visiting scholars to share their ideas and experiences in religion, philosophy and related disciplines. Related to the Presbyterian Church (USA), Davis & Elkins College is located in Elkins, 2 hours east of Charleston, 3 hours south of Pittsburgh and 4 hours west of Washington, DC.
