D&E Trustees Reduce Tuition
Posted: 03/16/09

Elkins, WV – The Davis and Elkins College Board of Trustees voted on Saturday to reduce tuition at the venerable 105-year old private college in order to “help our students and their families.” The action came after receiving word of a projected 20.4% increase in enrollment next year.

In announcing the Trustees’ decision, Board Chairman Paul Stirrup of Durham, NC, said, “With applications for admission running three times what they were a year ago, and deposits four times – even in the midst of tough economic times – our Board wanted to reach out to our present students and their families, as well as to those who will join us in the fall.”

The new full-time tuition will be $19,800 for a full year, including D&E’s popular Winter Term. “We are moving to a single tuition figure,” said D&E President G. T. “Buck” Smith. “We want to make it easy for our students and their families to know what it’s going to cost to go to college. There are no other mandated fees. For resident students, there will also be just one price for room and board of $7,450 per year.”

Even in good times, going to college can be a costly thing. Fortunately, there are Federal, State and private grants available as well as D&E’s endowed scholarship funds. “We try to make it possible for every student who wants the “D&E Experience” to be able to come here,” Smith noted. “We don’t want any student to miss that opportunity because of inadequate finances.”

“D&E is a real bargain,” said D&E Vice President Kevin Wilson. “We were already several hundred to several thousand dollars less expensive than most other private colleges. Though the nearly one percent decrease is modest, we’re now even more affordable, especially considering our greatly enhanced financial aid program.”

The reduced tuition for all students comes on the heels of national media attention to D&E last week when a major feature story on the College’s Highlands Scholar program appeared in newspapers across the country. The story was also broadcast on Public Radio. As Highlands Scholars, students graduating with a 2.5 or better GPA from high schools in the immediate seven-county area will be able to attend D&E at a tuition equal to the tuition and fees at WVU, currently $5,100.

“This means every Highlands Scholar will receive an annual scholarship of nearly $15,000,” said Smith. “And it brings the personal attention of a D&E education – which is our trademark – within reach of every area student who wants it and is willing to work for it.”

He continued: “I’m sometimes asked, ‘How can you afford to do this?’ My response is ‘How can we afford not to do it?’ We are an integral part of the Elkins community and the surrounding area. Folks are hurting. Our future leaders need the best possible chance at their future and that of our region. This is an investment in that future. It’s the least we can do.”
