Facilities

The nursing department is located in the Eschleman Science Center (SC). The central office area is in SC 215 which houses the office of the department chair and a full time secretary. The main clinical skills laboratory in SC 216 is designed for student learning and mastery of technical skills. The laboratory contains six hospital bed units, two computers with a printer, and tables and chairs. Specialized equipment is available including a respiratory mannequin with heart and lung sounds, a pediatric simulation mannequin, a reproduction birth mannequin, medication carts, electronic thermometer, intravenous infusion pumps, multiple CDs and computer programs, and various other types of equipment necessary for teaching nursing students. In addition, there are numerous library resources available in the skills lab for student use. This provides ready access to reference material for study purposes. Due to increased student numbers a second skills laboratory space was added in fall, 2004. This space is located in SC 219 and houses an additional six hospital bed units.

In addition to the two computers in the skills lab there are two large computer labs available to students in the Science Center where the nursing department is housed. Students have access to these computers during regular hours and also during some evening and week-end hours. There are also computers available in several other computer labs on campus.

A comprehensive and current library is available on campus for student use. The library facilities are open approximately 90 hours a week when classes are in session and operate on a more limited basis during breaks.

In addition to the facilities on campus the Department of Nursing maintains working agreements with several area hospitals and other healthcare facilities. These agencies provide a wide variety of clinical experience for the nursing students as they progress through the program. The facilities where students receive clinical instruction include but are not limited to the following:

Bio-Medical Applications (Dialysis Center)

Cortland Acres Nursing Home

Crestview Manor

Davis Memorial Hospital

Elkins Regional Convalescent Center

Hospice Care Corporation

Mountain Hospice

Randolph-Elkins Health Department

St. Joseph's Hospital

United Hospital Center

West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc.

William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital
