The Potomac Highlands and the surrounding area in the State are rich in opportunities to hike and backpack.  Whether you are looking for challenging terrain or just leisurely hikes, West Virginia is for you! 

The Monongahela National Forest is made up of 900,000 acres and offers the most amount of hiking opportunities.  The National Forest hosts a total of 825 miles of trails, 135 of which are located in Wilderness Areas and are only open to foot travel.  State Parks and State Forests also offer a wide range of opportunities for everyone.  The following list is a conglomeration of different and unique opportunities for the hiker and backpacker who wish to explore the Potomac Highlands and the surrounding area.  If you prefer to ride horseback rather than hike, this site will help you find horseback outfitters and stables.
