D&E Woods Orientation: 35 Years
August 31 - September 2 (Labor Day Weekend)
What is Woods Orientation?
.It's an exciting adventure shared with other incoming students, professors, and administrators who want to help you get the most out of your education.
.It's sitting around a campfire eating s'mores and making friends.
.It's a chance to discover the natural beauty of the Elkins area and Spruce Knob - the highest point in West Virginia.
.It's good food and good music.
.It's a celebration of your decision to take your education down the right path with Davis & Elkins College.
. It's for everyone -- from novices to outdoor enthusiasts.
D&E's Woods Outdoor Orientation is our traditional way of welcoming new students and offering them an experience through which they can get acquainted with each other, as well as faculty and staff. For you, it's a chance to have fun, relax, taste a little adventure, get involved, and get the inside scoop from other D&E folks.
Many D&E students recall this unique orientation as one of their favorite
college experiences.
"The Woods experience gave me the perfect opportunity to know myself and others better, opening
to me new friendships and the ideal introduction to Davis & Elkins College."
"I learned to approach challenges with a positive and open-minded attitude"
"The guides were great, the students were friendly, the faculty members informative, the air
was crisp and cool, and I made many new friends."
How does it all work?
Food is provided. by the staff of Graceland. You have to taste it to believe it.
Music is provided. by you, me, and anyone else who wants to pick up a drum and beat the heck out of it! Leading the organized chaos of our campfire drum circle is none-other than Jim Donovan of Rusted Root fame. He will stop in to provide the drums and show us how to find a beat.
Nature is provided. by the Allegheny Highlands, an area of unsurpassed beauty and adventure.
Expect sun and maybe some rain. Expect to carry your own load, do your share of the camp chores, get tired, and maybe even wet. You will laugh a lot and maybe shed a few tears. You will find new friends with whom to share your excitement as well as your apprehensions about beginning college. You will see some beautiful places, and you will learn some new things about yourself and your fellow classmates. Most important, you will be welcomed and supported by everyone around you.
All you need to bring is yourself; ready and willing to leap into the fun and challenge of college,
and the few items listed on the Equipment Checklist.
More than 1500 students have enjoyed Woods Orientation at D&E. Don't miss your chance to become a part of this tradition!
