WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING WOODS GUIDE APPLICATIONS

Please click Woods Guide Application to print yours today!

What is a Woods Guide?
Woods Guides are upper class students who participate in D&E's annual Woods Orientation program for new students as mentors and leaders.

As a mentor Woods Guides are friends. They help facilitate the orientation of new students by listening to the thoughts and concerns of participants, by answering their questions openly and honestly as individuals who have "been there, done that", and as students who know the D&E structure well enough to give accurate information as to where students can go for with further questions over particular issues.

As leaders Woods Guides are responsible assistants to the professional instructors of The Mountain Institute (TMI). In this role Woods Guides act as the ideal participant by leading through example. When a fire needs built, a camp needs set up, food needs cooked, or dishes need washed Woods Guides chip in enthusiastically encouraging the group into more meaningful participation. As a result, avenues for conversation, group bonding, and facilitation of the mentor role are created. As leaders, Woods Guides also have enough familiarity with the lay out, location, and equipment used in the experience so that they can truly assist TMI instructors and give appropriate feedback when necessary.

Not sure if you are up for the task? Apply anyway. All those selected will take part in a three-day two-night training session that will bring you up to speed. Though the training is an educational experience it is also a heck of a lot of fun. We will be learning while hiking, camping, caving, and orienteering.

In 1996 the North Fork Mountain Trail (NFMT) was named the best trail in West Virginia! For 23.8 miles the trail follows the ridgeline of North Fork Mountain offering exceptional scenery the entire way. Once on top of the mountain the trail is moderately level and easy to follow. Rock outcrops offer spectacular views both east and west in to neighboring valleys. Hikers exploring the trail, which passes through hardwood forests, are likely to see deer, turkey, and even the occasional wild goat.
